I had a column to publish today about (what else) rail travel around the world, but I just can’t imagine posting those words in the aftermath of today’s school shooting in Connecticut wherein 28 people have lost their lives–most of them children under the age of 10. I’ve lost my appetite for travel, for writing, for food. Everything.
As this magazine’s token American columnist, I composed several paragraphs about this tragedy and the complicated relationship between my home country and guns before deleting every last one. I think it’s better to wait for the appropriate words to come– if they do–with time. President Obama has already said all anyone can really say in the direct wake of the shootings.
In the meantime, hug your people. It’s during times like these that I wish I were closer to my own.

Absolutely devastating. So sorry you have to be far from home for this – thinking all my American friends and family all over the world.
